On this day in 2008, Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray to win his 5th consecutive U.S. Open Men’s Tennis title. Federer is by far the most successful male tennis player of all time, having won a record 20 Grand Slam singles titles. He has also won a record 6 ATP Finals titles, 28 ATP Tour Masters 1000 titles, and a record 24 ATP Tour 500 titles. Federer has held the number one ranking for a total of 310 weeks, including a record 237 consecutive weeks. He has over 1,200 wins in the Open Era, and is currently number four in the ATP rankings. Throughout Federer’s career, he has earned close to $130 million in prize winnings.
