Today in Sports History: September 7

On this day in 1986, the Cleveland Browns became the first team in NFL history to have a play reviewed by instant replay. Instant replay technology has come a long way since then, but the goal has always remained the same. Instant replay utilizes a combination of advanced technologies such as, video servers and high-speed cameras to improve the accuracy of calls made. Recording at up to several thousand frames per second, the cameras see what the naked eye may miss. Currently the rules in the NFL allow each coach two opportunities per game to make a “coach’s challenge,” and get a third challenge if both of the original two challenges were successful.
