On May 27, 1981, Julius “Dr. J” Erving of the Philadelphia 76ers won the NBA MVP award after averaging 24.6 points, 8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 2.1 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game. This type of season was typical for Dr. J, showing the all-around player he was, capable of putting up stats in every category. After winning three MVP awards in the ABA, this season made Dr. J the only player in basketball history to win the MVP in both leagues. Dr. J was also a two-time ABA champion and one-time NBA champion during his Hall of Fame playing career.
