Today in Sports History: May 3

By Michael Romanelli

On May 3rd, 2011, Chicago Bulls Point Guard Derrick Rose was named MVP, becoming the youngest player to ever win the award. Rose averaged 25 points, 7.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game. Not only did Rose join Michael Jordan as the only Bulls players to win MVP, but he also lead Chicago to a 62-20 season, the team’s best record since Jordan played. At the Bulls media day, Rose asked reporters “…why can’t I win MVP?” and the quote was generally dismissed as a display of confidence. After winning MVP, Rose said “Back in training camp when I said I wanted to be MVP, I wasn’t trying to be cocky at all… I knew that I put a lot of hard work in over the summer in the offseason”
