On December 24, 1974, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Lou Brock was named the Sporting News Player of the Year. During the 1974 MLB season, Brock was second place in MVP voting, batting .306. He also broke the modern MLB record for most steals that season, with 118—he would later set the record for most steals in a career—both records were broken by Rickey Henderson. Brock was a two-time World Series Champion, 8-time NL leader in stolen bases, and first-ballot Hall of Famer.
