On December 16, 1972, the Miami Dolphins became the first team in NFL history to end a regular season undefeated, finishing 14-0, and would go on to win the Super Bowl. By beating Washington 14-7 in Super Bowl VII, the Dolphins became the first and only NFL team to finish a season, including playoffs, undefeated. The Dolphins were led by running backs Mercury Morris and Larry Csonka, who both surpassed 1,000 rushing yards on the season on offense, and head coach Don Shula for one of the best NFL seasons in history.
