On October 9, 1997, legendary college basketball coach Dean Smith announced his retirement after 36 years at the University of North Carolina. While at UNC, Smith racked up what was then an unprecedented and men’s college basketball record 879 wins. His record has since been passed by fellow legends such as Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim. Smith coached several basketball legends during his time at UNC, such as Jerry Stackhouse, Antawn Jamison, Sam Perkins, Vince Carter, James Worthy, and of course, Michael Jordan.
