On August 22, 1984, Dwight “Doc” Gooden of the New York Mets recorded his 200th strikeout of his rookie season. Doc is one of only 16 pitchers to record 200 strikeouts in his rookie season. He wound up with 276 strikeouts in his rookie year, which is still the record for most strikeouts by a rookie pitcher, and won Rookie of the Year. Doc was a four-time All-Star and won the Cy Young award in 1985. He also pitched a no-hitter during his career and won three World Series—one with the Mets and two with the Yankees.
