In 1996, the Dallas Mavericks set a then NBA record for 3-point field goal attempts (49) in a 127-117 win over the New Jersey Nets. The Mavericks converted on 18 threes. Small forward George McCloud led the team shooting 7-20 from deep. The 20 attempts by McCloud was also a record at the time. In 2018, Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors made 14-24 three point attempts to break McCloud’s attempt record. The 14 made threes also set a new record for the most made threes by a player in a single game. The current NBA record for 3-point field goal attempts by a team is held by the Houston Rockets. On Jan.16, 2019, the Rockets attempted 70 threes and converted on 23. Shooting Guard James Harden led the Rockets shooting 5-19. In 2000, three pointers made up an average of 17 percent of total shots per game. That number has since skyrocketed to 39.7 percent in 2020.
