Today in Sports History: November 16

Wilt Chamberlain scored 73 points during a 1962 San Francisco Warriors verus New York Knicks game. Chamberlain’s 73-point feat tied him with David Thompson for the third-highest single-game total. He later broke his own record by notching 78, then 100 points in two separate 1962 games. Chamberlain still holds the record for most points scored in a single game with Kobe Bryant in second place at 81 points in 2006.

Chamberlain made his NBA debut with the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors in 1959 and received the 1972 Finals MVP award. Chamberlain set himself apart as a scoring champion, an all-time top rebounder, and an accurate field goal shooter. He later played for the Philadelphia 76ers and ended his career with the Los Angeles Lakers. Chamberlain was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978 and named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.
