Today in Sports History: August 28

On this day in 2004, the U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team defeated Lithuania, 104-96, to capture the bronze medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics. Since the introduction of NBA players, this would be the only time Team USA finished without winning Olympic gold. Argentina knocked the U.S. from gold contention when San Antonio Spurs legend Manu Ginobili guided Argentina to a 89-81 victory over the United States in the Olympic semifinal round. The 2004 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team did have many talented players, however, they were young. LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwayne Wade were all on the team, but they had only been drafted to the league only the year prior in 2003. Unfortunately, the small amount of veteran presence was felt. The team shot poorly from the three point line and lost three times during the entire tournament.
