On this day in 2017, Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated UFC champion Conor McGregor by TKO in the 10th round at the T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip. The unprecedented boxing match featured Mayweather, an unbeaten five-division world champion boxer, against McGregor, a UFC Champion making his pro boxing debut. The highly anticipated match not only lived up to the hype, but surpassed the expectations of many fight fans. McGregor started off strong, even leading on the judges score cards in the first few rounds. However, the longer stamina intensive boxing rounds ultimately gave the edge to the seasoned veteran. Mayweather took advantage of the tired UFC Champion in the later rounds. The referee was eventually forced to call a stoppage in the 10th round following a series of punches to McGregor’s face, after McGregor failed to defend himself.
