On this day in 2006, a fourth grade classroom realized the power of its voice when a bill was passed declaring basketball as the official sport of Massachusetts. The fourth graders at the Mulready School in Hudson, persuaded local legislators to file the bill. Massachusetts has celebrated other sports championships, but basketball holds a special place in their history. Not only was the sport was invented in Springfield by James Naismith in 1891, but the Boston Celtics hold the most NBA championships with 17 titles. The team’s most recent title was in 2008, when the Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.
