Today in Sports History: July 24

In 1993, Vince Coleman signed a $3 million with the New York Mets where he did not lead up to his legacy as one of the fastest base-runners in the league. Coleman has stolen more than 100 stolen bases and set a record for stealing 50 bases in a row in 1989. Not only did his playing not live up to the Met’s expectations but Coleman played a practical joke by tossing fireworks into a crowd at Dodger Stadium. After the July 24 incident, Coleman played three additional games with the team before the Mets dismissed him from the team.
