Today in Sports History: March 20

John Havlicek became the first NBA player to tally over 1,000 points in a single season in 1976. It wasn’t until 14 years later that another player managed this feat. Havlicek was drafted as the 7th overall pick in 1962 and played with the Boston Celtics for his entire 16-season career. He is among only four players in league history to have eight championships under his belt. Havlicek still holds the 8-0 NBA Finals record despite retiring from professional basketball in 1978. At the time of his retirement, Havlicek led the league in games played, field goal attempts, and missed field goals. These records have now been surpassed by more contemporary players. His no. 17 jersey was retired by the Celtics and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984.
