Just three years after the Wang Zhizhi became the first Chinese player to be drafted by the National Basketball Association (NBA), the the NBA opened its first official office in Beijing, China. NBA games have been broadcast live in China since 1994 and, according to the league, more than 300 million people in China play basketball. Since the office opened in 2002, NBA teams regularly play pre-season games in China and Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) coaches travel to the U.S for clinics and workshops. And that partnership is still going strong, last year, live streaming platform, Tencent and the NBA decided to extend their partnership through the 2024-25 season for a reported $1.5 billion.
