Today in Sports History: June 28

By Jonah Sharf

On June 28, 1997, Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ear during the third round of their rematch. The penalty resulted in his immediate disqualification, and he was not able to return to boxing until January of 1999. The bite was purportedly a retaliation to Holyfield’s headbutts during the first fight, which Tyson took exception to. Despite his controversies, Tyson is considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time and one of the hardest hitters in boxing history.
