Today in Sports History: May 19

By Jonah Sharf

On May 19, 1984, the Edmonton Oilers finally put an end to the New York Islanders’ four-year reign as Stanley Cup Champions. Led by legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, the Oilers won 4-1, a year after being swept by the Islanders. Messier won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, and the Oilers would go on to repeat that year and win five total championships in the 80s/90s.
