Today in Sports History: April 9

By Jonah Sharf

On April 9, 1978, George “the Iceman” Gervin of the Spurs scored 63 points in the final regular season game of the season to beat out the Nuggets’ David Thompson in one of the closest battles for the scoring title in NBA history. Gervin ended the season averaging 27.22 points per game, while Thompson—who scored 73 points earlier that day—averaged 27.15 points per game. The Iceman would go on to win the scoring title three more times in his career—only all-time greats Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan have recorded more scoring titles.
