On September 12, 2005, all-time great and hockey legend Mark Messier announced his retirement from the sport on ESPN radio. Messier won six Stanley Cup championships, five during his time with the Edmonton Oilers, and one with the New York Rangers—he served as the captain for two of those. He is well-known for his leadership throughout his career, especially with the Rangers, but he also ranks third all-time in points and second all-time in playoff points. Messier was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007, and is consistently ranked in the top 10 of NHL players of all time.
