On August 27, 1982, Oakland A’s legend Rickey Henderson broke Lou Brock’s single season record for most stolen bases in a season with his first steal of the game and 119th of the season. Henderson would go on to steal three more bases in that game, and finished the season with 130 stolen bases, a record that no one has come close to breaking since. Henderson is known as one of the greatest leadoff hitters ever, and of course is almost unanimously regarded as the greatest base runner of all time. He finished his career with three 100-stolen base seasons and led his league in stolen bases 12 times. His career total for stolen bases was 1,406, which shattered Brock’s previous record of 938. Henderson was more than a runner though, he was a fantastic all-around hitter, as he is one of just 32 members of the 3,000 hit club, and he also holds the record for most runs scored in a career with 2,295. He had excellent plate discipline as well, as he has the second-most walks drawn after Barry Bonds, and the most unintentional walks drawn. The Hall-of-Famer was a 10-time All-Star, ALCS and AL MVP, and a two-time World Series champion.
