On August 13, 1999, tennis legend Steffi Graf announced her retirement at 30 years old after playing 17 years of professional tennis. She held the sole record of most grand slam singles titles with 22 from 1999 until Serena Williams tied it in 2016 at Wimbledon and broke it with her 23rd grand slam at the 2017 Australian Open. Graf was widely considered the greatest female tennis player of all time until Williams came around, and is still tied with Williams for most consecutive weeks ranked as the world no. 1 and most total weeks at no. 1 with 377.
