In 2001, Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson both scored more than 40 points during Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers scored 48 points and the Lakers’ Shaquille O’Neal scored 44 points. This marked the second time in league history that players from opposing teams both recorded more than 40 points. Both Iverson and O’Neal won MVP awards. The 76ers won 107-101 in overtime, marking the Laker’s only loss in the series. The Lakers won what would be the second victory in a three peat (2000-2002).
