On March 7, 1986, Wayne Gretzky scored his 136th assist of the regular season against the Pittsburgh Penguins, breaking his own record from the year prior. Gretzky wound up finishing the 1985-86 regular season with a still-standing single-season record of 163 assists, in addition to his famous record of 215 points.
1985-86 was one of a record 16 times where Gretzky, the NHL all-time assist leader, led the league in assists, and one of a record 11 times where he, the NHL all-time points leader, led the league in points. Gretzky, who has won more Hart Memorial Trophies and more Ted Lindsay Awards than anyone in history, is universally considered to be the greatest NHL hockey player of all-time. There are very few athletes who have ever dominated in their respective sport the way Gretzky dominated with a hockey stick in his hand.
