On this day in 1978, New Jersey Nets point guard Kevin Porter dished out 29 assists in a 126-112 win over the Houston Rockets. Porter’s record lasted more than a dozen years, until Orlando Magic’s Scott Skiles collected 30 assists against the Denver Nuggets on December 30, 1990. Currently, the active player with the most assists in a single game is Rajon Rondo. Rondo recorded 25 assists in a single game in 2017.

The 39th pick in the 1972 NBA Draft, Porter played eight seasons in the NBA. Porter was a brilliant passer and 4x NBA assists leader (1975, 1978, 1979, 1981). Porter averaged 11.6 points and 8.1 assists over his career.
