In 2019, Naomi Osaka became world #1 ranked player in tennis  after defeating Petra Kvitová 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 in the Australian Open. Osaka became the first Japanese player to win the Australian singles title. Osaka shocked the tennis world in 2018, when she defeated Serena Williams to win the U.S. Open at age 20. Osaka turned pro in 2013, and has since won the Australian Open and the U.S. Open twice (2018, 2020). In 2019, Osaka won the most prize money on the WTA Tour ($6.4 million). She was also the highest-paid female athlete in 2019, earning $37.4 million dollars. Osaka is currently ranked no. 3 by the WTA.
