In 1981, Bill Cartwright tied a league-wide record set by Bob Pettit when he made 19 consecutive free throws during a New York Knicks versus Kansas City Knights game. Cartwright held the record until Moses Malone bested him with 20 free throws in 1985. Adrian Dantley holds the current number one and number two spots with 28 and 27 free throws in 1984 and 1983.
Cartwright spent 16 seasons in the NBA and was the first round, third overall pick in the 1979 draft. He played for the Knicks, Chicago Bulls, and Seattle SuperSonics before transitioning to coaching. He was part of the Bulls’ three-peat (1991, 1992, 1993) as a coach he won three more consecutive championships with the Bulls in (1996, 1997, 1998).
