Isn 1997, the WNBA played its first regular season games. The New York Liberty beat the Los Angeles Sparks 67-57. The Liberty and the Sparks faced off in front of 14,284 fans at the Great Western Forum and a national television audience on NBC. The league started with just eight teams: Charlotte Sting, Cleveland Rockers, Houston Comets, Los Angeles Sparks, New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Sacramento Monarchs, and the Utah Starzz, and currently has 12.
