Today in Sports History: May 6

By Michael Romanelli

On May 6, 1997, Hartford Whalers Owner Peter Karmanos announced that the team was moving to North Carolina and would be known as the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes would not have the same blue and green color scheme as the Whalers, and instead used black and red. For the first few seasons, the Hurricanes struggled to find success. However, they started to make the playoffs in the early 2000s and became Stanley Cup Champions in 2006. The Hurricanes are currently seeking their second Stanley Cup, and are coached by 2006 Captain Rod Brind’Amour.
