Today in Sports History: March 31

By Jonah Sharf

On March 31, 1975, legendary UCLA basketball head coach John Wooden won his 10th national title, and immediately afterwards he announced his retirement. Wooden led several incredible UCLA teams, with stars including Walt Hazzard, Gail Goodrich, Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), Henry Bibby, and Bill Walton, among others. Wooden is considered by many to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, college basketball coaches of all time, having led UCLA to 10 national titles in 12 years. Wooden was also an incredibly successful motivational writer, with his “Pyramid of Success” serving not only to help basketball players and coaches, but businessmen as well.
