On November 7, 1991, in a moment that transcended the world of sports, Magic Johnson announced that he was retiring from basketball because he had tested positive for HIV. While initially many had negative reactions to the revelation, after much advocating for awareness of HIV, the NBA community seemed to rally around Magic in his fight against the virus. Magic has been very productive since, and has become an activist for HIV awareness in addition to many other issues. Magic is considered one of the greatest point guards in NBA history, as he helped lead the Lakers to five championships in his career, averaging 19.5 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per game, and 11.2 assists per game. Magic was a three-time NBA MVP and three-time NBA Finals MVP award winner, and now serves as the president of basketball operations for the Lakers.
